Educational requirements

State law mandates that all licensees complete continuing education (CE).  The hours of CE you need is dependent upon whether you are a new licensee or a renewing licensee.  Complete information on CE requirements is available from the PROSOURCE website.

The board does not keep track of the CE credit you have taken.  You may check with PROSOURCE or the Department of Commerce for that information; however, we encourage you to keep track of your CE yourself, and we've created a handy spreadsheet to help you do so. Download the CE credit sheet now!

Note that ethics requirements are specific to being part of a REALTOR assocation.  You must take ethics every four years.  New members fulfill the first four years' ethics requirement during orientation.  SPAAR does keep track of when you last took the ethics class - contact us at spaar@spaar.com to find out if you need to take ethics.

The National Association of Realtors offers the ethics class online (choose the Quadrennial Realtor Ethics Training option).  This is free and automatically updates your records.  However it is not approved for any CE credits.

Educational opportunities offered by SPAAR

The association offers several educational options throughout the year.  Scheduled classes may be viewed by going to the calendar of events. To register for classes by SPAAR, please log in to IMS. If you register for a SPAAR course, please take a look at our Course PolicyYou may also want to read our Education Policy.

Training on the NorthstarMLS system for new and experienced users is also available.  With this training, members may explore the variety of tools available on the MLS. Classes on MLS are offered several times a month and are approved for 3 CE credits. Please view our calendar for dates. Also, course descriptions for the majority of MLS courses offered are available for download.

The Education and Events Update informs members of upcoming educational opportunities offered by the association and other organizations, such as the Sensible Land Use Coalition and the Minnesota Association of REALTORS®.  Some classes are approved for CE credit, and others are just good ways to learn about the local housing industry.

Orientation is offered every month and is required to be taken by all new members within 90 days of joining the association, and fulfills the initial ethics requirement.

Twice a year the Association holds a forum, with special guest speakers on a variety of topics.  Past topics have included trends in the real estate industry and the issues surrounding mold.

Educational opportunities offered outside of SPAAR

The association also has special negotiated rates with PROSOURCE, a training center offering classes on many real estate topics.  Visit them at www.prosource.com to view their upcoming classes.  Members can purchase a Super Pass, a pre-paid card to take 15 credits of education.  Contact the association to find out more about this option, or view the online course catalog for the SuperPass.

SPAAR is also affiliated with CRS online education program, offering your direct access to CRS courses and training. For more on CRS, please click here.

Many educational programs are offered through the state and national associations such as diversity training, a Mini-MBA in real estate, CRS training, e-PRO etc.  Go to the links page to see how you may contact those associations directly to find out more.  Ethics is an online course option at www.realtor.org.  This option is free and automatically updates your records.

The Government Training Service offers a number of affordable educational programs, often with continuing education credit.  Visit them at www.mngts.org/ for upcoming programs.

New to computers?  The Science Museum of Minnesota offers training in computer and internet basics, both for Windows and Macintosh users.  And for more advanced users they offer desktop publishing and web development and design.  Call them at 651-221-4722 or visit their website.
